Public education is under attack in this country, it has been for a while now, look at states like Florida and Texas.
Witness book bannings, attacks on educators for a made-up “CRT” curriculum, and the inaction to create budgets for schools - all while teacher shortages loom and classrooms remain underfunded.
In Texas, our government leaders’ fight isn’t to fortify our schools or honor educators with proper pay; it’s a relentless push to pass laws diverting public funds, masquerading as ‘parent choice.’
This isn’t progress; it’s a dangerous game.
Taking cues from failed experiments in Arizona and Michigan, these laws won’t magically create more private schools or make tuition affordable for struggling families. Private and charter schools operate without the checks and balances set by the public, leaving the door wide open for exploitation.
Let’s be crystal clear: the beneficiaries aren’t the underprivileged families dreaming of a private school education; it’s those who already have the means. It’s a discount for the privileged few.
As the battle intensifies, we must arm ourselves with knowledge and resilience. Fight for the promise of public education—a right for every student, not just the privileged few. The stakes are high, the fight is real, and the time to stand up is now.
